ARTIST STATEMENT

Being a child of a government worker allowed me to witness all sorts of arts in various cultural scenes.  Examples being Salt Lake City, Washington D.C, Mexico City, and L.A.. Washington D.C. with its bounteous collection of art museums, Mexico City with its Murals and glass gardens, and Los Angeles with its street art and architecture allowed me to witness the everchanging world of art.

Organic materials resonate with me and help me feel more one with nature. When it comes to art, Mother Nature seems to do it the best.

Putting the human figure on a 2D surface has its challenges, and the process changes the way you view everyday scenes. The human figure is made up of simple highlights, lowlights, and other simple shapes. My method of choice to draw the figure involves a black canvas and erasing away till my subject matter is unveiled.

The female figure is my preferred subject. The prolific female painter Emily Mae Smith said, “We are living in a time that’s ripe with a debate over what it means to be a human in one kind of body or another…” To me, the female figure is one of the most beautiful things on earth.

The human body is a masterpiece, and the lines and curves of the female form take my breath away. Women are strong yet weak, rough yet soft. My mother inspired me to draw, and she happened to be my subject of choice as a young girl in the pages found in my $5 Walmart sketchbooks.
